Boston Charles River Trails
The trails along the Charles River are
outstanding and constitute the main training
place for many Boston and Cambridge
runners.  The bridges provide many route
options of various distances.
To help you appreciate all the route options

We have researched and mapped those running/walking routes we
consider the very best and published them in the book

Here are some routes within 5 miles radius of downtown Boston:
South Boston: U Mass, the Shore, the
Sugar Bowl.  A 7.9-mile route along the
shore and through the center of South
Boston.  Starts and ends at T stations.

Boston - Brookline - Jamaica Plain: The
Emerald Necklace.  6.7 miles from Back
Bay to the Forest Hills T via the Fens and
Jamaica Pond.

Cambridge: Fresh Pond Reserve.  A 3.9
mile loop of the reservoir with connections
to/from the Alewife T.

Medford - Somerville: Mystic River
Reserve.  A 2.5 mile loop through natural
parkland, starting and finishing at the
Wellington Circle T.
Greater Boston Routes Inside Route 128

Some popular routes, further out but still within easy transit reach of
Boston via the T subway or commuter rail:
Quincy - Dorchester: Quincy Shore and
Neponset River.  A 6.5 mile route from
Quincy, around Wollaston Beach, through
Pope John Paul II Park and the Neponset
River Reservation to Milton.

Newton - Brookline - Back Bay: Finishing
the Boston Marathon.  The last 10 miles of
the Boston Marathon route starting from
the Woodland T station.
Cambridge - Watertown - Waltham: Charles River.  A 7.0 mile route
along the Charles upstream from Harvard, ending in Waltham.

Cambridge - Arlington - Lexington: Minuteman Bikeway: 6.5 miles
from the Alewife T to the center of historic Lexington along a multiuse
trail with no vehicles nearby.

Winchester - Medford - Stoneham: Middlesex Fells West [read
article]. A 7 mile run or walk through a beautiful nature reservation
convenient to Boston's northern suburbs.

Malden - Medford - Stoneham: Middlesex Falls East.  Up to 8 miles of
varied terrain reachable from the Malden Center T station.

Swampscott - Lynn - Nahant: Lynn Shore and Nahant.  An
unforgettable 10.6 mile seaside run around the Nahant peninsula,
starting and finishing at the Swampcsott commuter rail station.

Swampscott - Marblehead - Stoneham: The Path.  A 7.9 mile route
on the Marblehead peninsula via a pleasant rail trail, finishing up in lively
and historic Salem.

Cape Cod and the Islands
Provincetown: Province Lands Loop.  
Take a ferry from Boston for a day trip to
Provincetown.  Do an on-foot 7.6-mile loop
on a paved running trail through the
fascinating Province Lands dunes, before
partying and exploring P'town history.
Harwich - Eastham - Wellfleet: Cape Cod Rail Trail.  Choose a
segment of the 22-mile Cape Cod Rail Trail, and finish the loop by bus.
Province Lands Trail
Falmouth - Woods Hole: Shining Sea Bike
Path.  Run or walk the Falmouth Shining
Sea Bike Path, explore Woods Hole
oceanographic offerings, and take a free
shuttle bus back.

Martha's Vineyard: Oak Bluffs - Edgartown
Loop.  A loop up to 11.6 miles accessed by
ferry to Oak Bluffs, Edgartown, or Vineyard

Martha's Vineyard: South Beach -
Chappaquiddick Loop.  A fascinating 10.7
mile loop from Edgartown.

Nantucket: West Side Loop.  A 5.7 mile
loop out of Nantucket Town.
